Abstract

Purpose:This study was designed to verify the effect of spouse participation during labor and the degree of support that pregnant women in labor perceived after the one session spouse s support reinforcement prenatal education program.

Method:For this study, a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. In order to set up the objectives, this researcher developed the support reinforcement education program of spouse for one session. The experimental group was educated couples before labor and control group was not educated couples before labor in clinic. The subjects for this study were 87primiparas and 86spouses of primiparas who had vaginal deliveries in pregnancy from 37weeks in pregnancy to 42 weeks without postpartum complications. The research material was used to self answered questionnaires papers consisted of 51 items on general characteristics, prenatal information and the request of participation during labor, the participation effect of spouses and support degree to pregnant woman and data about neonate state were collected from medical record. SASv8.12 was used for the analysis of the data, In this analysis, &test and t-test were conducted.

Result:There was a significant difference in the participation effect that pregnant women had perceived between experimental group and control group. There was not a significant difference in support degree of spouse that pregnant women had perceived. There was a significant difference in the participation effect of spouse and the support degree to pregnant women that spouses had perceived between experimental group and control group.

Conclusion:The participation effect and support degree of spouse to pregnant women during labor was higher in experimental group than in control group. Therefore, we suggest that this one session spouse support reinforcement prenatal education in clinic is very helpful to couples that could not receive long-term prenatal childbirth education. Thus nurses in maternal care part are encouraged to provide pregnant women support reinforcement education program for spouse before labor pain onset and should be developed continually in clinic.
